Frequently Asked Questions

What is the rate of pay for substitute teachers?

The rate of pay is $110/day for short-call assignments and $125/day for long-term assignments.  Long-term assignments are considered 15 or more continuous days in one sub assignment.  The long-term assignment must be for the same teacher, teaching the same subject for 15 or more continuous days.  In order to take a long-term sub assignment, you must also be appropriately licensed in that subject and grade level.

How do substitute teachers get paid?

Substitutes must submit time sheets in order to be paid.  Substitute timecard books must be taken to each assignment and signed either by the principal or lead secretary.  It is the substitute teachers responsibility to drop off or send the timesheet to the Payroll Department,  ATTN: Payroll, 360 Colborne Street, St. Paul MN 55102.  You can expect NOT to be paid if there is no signature on the timesheet.  Click here for a payroll schedule:  http://hr.spps.org/Payroll_Schedule.html

When does AESOP start calling out assignments?

- Morning call-out:  Aesop starts calling out at 5:00 a.m., Monday through Friday, and usually calls out until about 1:00 p.m.  All of the calls you receive in the morning are for subs needed that same day.

- Afternoon call-out:  Aesop has an evening call-out period which starts at 5:00 p.m. and ends at exactly 10:00 p.m.  All the calls you receive during the evening call-out period are for jobs in the future.

- Weekend call-out:  Aesop starts calling from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

What should I do if I can not accept sub assignments for a period of time?

If you are unavailable to work in the district for a period of time, log on to Aesop at http://www.aesoponline.com and modify your availability by adding a non-workday to your calendar.  If you do this, Aesop will not call you when you are not available.  Please include a reason for your unavailability.

How do I know if school is closing due to inclement weather?

In the event that Saint Paul Public Schools are closed due to inclement weather, information will broadcast on WCCO-AM Radio starting around 5:00 a.m.  The information is also noted on the district's web site at www.spps.org

Can I substitute teach during the summer months?

You can only substitute during the summer months if you are on the preferred list for the schools that operate during summer.  You must also have a current Minnesota teaching license issued from the Minnesota Department of Education.

My Limited Short-Call license is going to expire, what do I do?

If you are a short call substitute teacher whose teaching license has expired or will expire on June 30th and you plan to continue subbing, you will need to renew your license. To do so, you will have to apply online at the Minnesota Department of Education's website at https://education.state.mn.us/MIDMS/login.jsf?AppID=CEL (Make sure you complete the correct application. If you have questions, you can call MDE at 651-582-8691.)

Once you have the application completed, submit the "District Verification for Limited Short-Call Substitute License" form to Saint Paul Public Schools, Human Resources Department, ATTN: Substitute Teachers, 360 Colborne Street, St. Paul MN 55102. Your file and application will be reviewed and your form will be signed.  After your form has been signed, you will receive a phone call informing you that you can pick it up. It is then your responsibility to submit it to the Department of Education for processing.

How do I resign from being a Substitute Teacher with Saint Paul Public Schools?

If you decide to leave the district, we will need a 'resignation letter' from you so we can deactivate you in the system.  Please also return your I.D. badge to the Human Resources Department, ATTN: Substitute Teachers, 360 Colborne Street, St. Paul MN 55102.
