How do I apply to be a Substitute Teacher with Saint Paul Public Schools?
In order to be considered for substitute teaching, you must apply using our online application system. Click here to apply: www.hr.spps.org/applicants. Make sure you add the "Substitute Teacher" position, (reference # 112743) to your job basket.

How can I get a status update on my application?
You may login to your account to view the status of your application. Following are the next steps once you have successfully completed the online application.

• Step 1 - Human Resources will review your application within 1 week of your submission date. If you do not hear from us within a week of submitting your online application, you may follow up with us on your status.
• Step 2 - If you are chosen to proceed with the next steps, Human Resources will email you additional paperwork to complete for further screening.
• Step 3 - Once your additional paperwork is completed and received by Human Resources, it may take up to 2 weeks to process.
• Step 4 - After all paperwork have been processed and cleared, you will receive an email to confirm your acceptance as a substitute teacher along with your log-in information for AESOP (sub system).

Is there an orientation or training for subs before they start accepting assignments?
There is an orientation online that you can view at your own pace. You can find the orientation at http://hr.spps.org/Substitute_Teachers.html. Once you are signed up as a substitute teacher, you will receive a sub packet with your AESOP log-in information. You can log-in to AESOP and go through the online tutorial about how to use AESOP.

What is the rate of pay for substitute teachers?
The rate of pay is $110/day for short-call assignments and $125/day for long-term assignments. Long-term assignments are considered 15 or more continuous days in one sub assignment. The long-term assignment must be for the same teacher, teaching the same subject for 15 or more continuous days. In order to take a long-term sub assignment, you must also be appropriately licensed in that subject and grade level.

What is the rate of pay for retired teachers who want to return and sub?
Saint Paul Public Schools' retired teachers who substitute teach on a casual or long-term basis for a minimum of 20 days in a school year shall receive a bonus of $20 per day for each day of substitute service. This bonus will be paid at the end of the school year in which substitute teaching service occurs.

What is the difference between a short-term sub and a long-term sub?
Short-term subs (also known as casual subs) can not work more than 14 continuous days in one assignment. Long-term subs are subs who work for 15 or more continuous days in one assignment. The long-term assignment must be for the same teacher, teaching the same subject for 15 or more continuous days. In order to take a long-term sub assignment, you must also be appropriately licensed in that subject and grade level.

Can I substitute teach during the summer months?
You can only substitute during the summer months if you are on the preferred list for the schools that operate during summer. You must also have a current Minnesota teaching license issued from the Minnesota Department of Education.

My Limited Short-Call license is going to expire, what do I do?
If you are a short call substitute teacher whose teaching license has expired or will expire on June 30th and you plan to continue subbing, you will need to renew your license. To do so, you will have to apply online at the Minnesota Department of Education's website at https://education.state.mn.us/MIDMS/login.jsf?AppID=CEL (Make sure you complete the correct application. If you have questions, you can call MDE at 651-582-8691.) Once you have the application completed, submit the "District Verification for Limited Short-Call Substitute License" form to Saint Paul Public Schools, Human Resources Department, ATTN: Substitute Teachers, 360 Colborne Street, St. Paul MN 55102. Your file and application will be reviewed before your form will be signed. After your form has been signed, you will receive a phone call informing you that you can pick it up. It is then your responsibility to submit it to the Department of Education for processing. If I have a 2-year Limited Short-Call License and am currently subbing in another district, can I also sub for Saint Paul Public Schools? Yes, you can also sub for SPPS, but in order to do so, SPPS must also sign a "District Verification for Limited Short-Call Substitute License" form for your records. Can I sub for Saint Paul Public Schools with a 5-year Limited Short-Call License?
Yes, you can sub for any district with a 5-year Limited Short-Call License. In order to be considered for Saint Paul Public Schools, you must apply using our online application system. Will Saint Paul Public Schools sign off on short call sub licenses?
Saint Paul Public Schools will only sign off on a short call sub license if you have taught for us in the past or have at least 1 year of fairly recent teaching experience with school aged students in grades PreK-12.
